The state fire marshal has been called to investigate a fire that destroyed a Jefferson house Thursday night.
Jefferson police officers were the first to arrive at 203 S. Oak St. The east (back) side of the house was fully engulfed in flames. Jefferson firefighters responded and extinguished the fire. Greene County Emergency Medical Services, Greene County sheriff’s deputies and Iowa State patrolmen assisted at the scene.
No one was inside the house when police officers arrived. The house, which was built in 1910, is owned by James Mitchell, and according to neighbors, extensive renovation was being done. The assessed value of the house is listed at $20,600.
The fire apparently started in the kitchen. The state fire marshal was called to assist with the investigation due to the nature of the fire.
The house is in the middle of the block and close to the house to the north. The fire was controlled before it spread to neighboring houses.
